INTEGRATHON workshop.

INTEGRATHON workshop.

On September 11, 2020 the INTEGRATHON workshop took place in Geneva. The goal of this event was to develop soft incentives (nudges) to promote scientific integrity in teaching, research and informal supervision contexts. The workshop took place partly face-to-face in Geneva, but also online, via Zoom. In order to combine a variety of knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, we have invited representatives of relevant groups: students, supervisors, research staff, academic administration, research integrity representatives, ethicists and nudging experts.

In order to combine a variety of knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, we have invited representatives of relevant groups.

In the morning, we had the pleasure of hearing our colleague Aurélien Allard, philosopher, psychologist and postdoc in the INTEGRITY project. He presented us with an Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), with a focus on students’perspective. We then listened to Prof. Ivo Vlaev, Professor, Behavioural Science Group, Warwick University, London. He presented an introdcution to nudging and its methods”. At the end of the morning, Prof. Valerio Capraro (Senior Lecturer in Economics Middlesex University, London) presented a talk entitled “Increasing altruistic and cooperative behaviour with simple moral nudges”.

We have worked on themes such as: Reporting; Fact checking & scientific credit; Applied RCR or Promoting INTEGRITY tools.

After a lunch break and a tasting of wine bottles proposed by Christine Clavien, we worked throughout the afternoon in subgroups to develop designs for nudge-type interventions. We have worked on themes such as: Reporting (motivate researchers/students to report RCR issues, e.g. misconduct observed or experienced); Fact checking & scientific credit (motivate to fact checking and to give credit to scientific rigor – independently of study results); Applied RCR (motivate students to learn how to apply theory into practice) or Promoting INTEGRITY tools (Motivate teachers and schools to use INTEGRITY teaching material).

It was an intense and productive day’s work. It allowed many stimulating exchanges.
